AHK-Cu vs Minoxidil: What Does the Research Say About Copper Peptides for Hair?

If you've been researching ingredients for thinning, fragile or lacklustre-looking hair, you've probably come across minoxidil.

But another ingredient is increasingly appearing in conversations around hair and scalp care: copper peptides — particularly AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu.

So, what exactly is AHK-Cu? How does it compare with minoxidil? And is there actually any research behind using copper peptides in a hair-care routine?

Let's look at the science.

What is AHK-Cu?

AHK-Cu, also known as Copper Tripeptide-3, is a small copper-binding peptide made from three amino acids: alanine, histidine and lysine.

It's particularly interesting in hair research because of its interaction with dermal papilla cells.

These specialised cells sit at the base of the hair follicle and play an important role in regulating the hair growth cycle.

And this is where the research gets interesting.

What does the research say about AHK-Cu and hair?

One frequently cited study investigated the effects of AHK-Cu on human hair follicles and cultured dermal papilla cells.

Researchers found that AHK-Cu stimulated the elongation of human hair follicles when studied ex vivo and also increased the proliferation of dermal papilla cells in laboratory conditions.

In other words, researchers observed measurable activity in the structures and cells directly associated with the hair follicle.

That's promising — but there's an important distinction.

This was primarily laboratory and ex-vivo research rather than a large clinical trial involving thousands of people using an AHK-Cu hair serum at home.

So while the findings help explain why AHK-Cu has become such an interesting cosmetic ingredient for scalp and hair formulations, they shouldn't be interpreted as proof that AHK-Cu treats hair loss.

AHK-Cu vs Minoxidil: are they the same thing?

No.

And despite the comparisons you'll sometimes see online, copper peptides shouldn't simply be described as a "natural minoxidil".

Minoxidil is a medicine.

It has been extensively studied for androgenetic alopecia and has decades of clinical data behind it.

In one large randomised clinical trial involving 393 men with androgenetic alopecia, researchers compared 5% topical minoxidil, 2% topical minoxidil and placebo over 48 weeks.

The 5% formulation produced 45% more hair regrowth than the 2% formulation at week 48 and was significantly more effective than placebo.

That's a much stronger level of clinical evidence than currently exists for AHK-Cu.

Copper peptides, meanwhile, are cosmetic ingredients being researched for their interactions with the environment surrounding the hair follicle.

So rather than asking:

"Is AHK-Cu better than minoxidil?"

A more useful question might be:

"What can copper peptides bring to a modern scalp and hair-care routine?"

Why are copper peptides so interesting for hair care?

Hair doesn't exist in isolation.

The appearance and condition of our hair are closely connected to the scalp and the environment surrounding each follicle.

That's one reason we're particularly interested in peptides that have been studied in relation to dermal papilla cells and follicle biology.

AHK-Cu research has explored areas including:

  • Human hair follicle elongation in ex-vivo models
  • Dermal papilla cell proliferation
  • Cellular signalling around the follicle
  • The environment supporting healthy-looking hair

The research is encouraging, but still developing.

We think that's an important distinction.

AHK-Cu isn't the only copper peptide

This is where things become even more interesting.

AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu (Copper Tripeptide-1) are different copper peptides.

GHK-Cu is probably the more recognisable of the two, particularly within skincare, while AHK-Cu has attracted particular interest within hair and scalp research.

Copper peptides or minoxidil?

It doesn't need to be framed as one ingredient "beating" the other.

Minoxidil has significantly stronger clinical evidence for treating androgenetic hair loss and is a licensed medicinal treatment.

Copper peptides occupy a very different space.

Ingredients such as AHK-Cu are being investigated for their interaction with hair follicles and dermal papilla cells, making them particularly interesting ingredients for modern cosmetic hair and scalp formulations.

For someone experiencing significant or unexplained hair loss, speaking to a GP, dermatologist or other qualified healthcare professional remains important. Hair loss can have many causes, and a cosmetic serum isn't a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.
